The port of Chania is at Souda Bay, six kilometers east from the city of Chania and south of the peninsula of Akrotiri. The port of Souda is the main passenger and commercial port of Chania and Western Crete, from the early 20th century when the old Venetian harbor stopped to be used as a port.

Close to Souda lies the village Megala Horafia. Located in a green and quiet area and although the Megala Chorafia is a very small village has some very nice restaurants, a café and a mini market. Megala Horafia is well known because of the ancient city of Aptera, located very close, and attracts thousands of tourists every year. The ancient city of Aptera is one of the oldest and most important cities of Crete. Reports of this ancient city is located from the 14th century BC in Linear B, until the 7th century AD when it was destroyed after a powerful earthquake. During the period between 1866 and 1869 a castle was built in the area by the Ottomans in order to suppress the Cretan Revolution. Today the castle is open to visitors during the entire year.

Near Souda lies Kalami which is a small village, near the hill fort Itzedin. Kalami is not too far from Kalyves and you can find various small and quiet beaches there (one with sand and some pebble beaches) overlooking Souda Bay. The town of Chania is within 10 km and Kalyves is five minutes by car. Although Kalami is relatively small, you can find there several hotels in order to spent you holidays in Chania.
